Backwaters in Kerala

The Backwaters in Kerala is like a necklace of lakes and lagoons adorning the landscape here . The backwaters in Kerala dot the entire landscape and stretches from the Malabar Coast of Kerala. There are five huge lakes here .

The lakes which include Ashtamudi Kayal and Vembanad Kayal are interlinked with 1900km long canals . The lakes are both natural as well as artificial and are fed by 38 rivers.

The Backwaters in Kerala were a result of the wave erosion and deposition which led to the formation of low islands emerging as a natural barrier along the deltas of many rivers of the Western Ghats.

What is most enjoyable is the serene boat cruises in the Kettuvalloms or country boats, which have been transformed in luxury boats called Kayals . When you travel through the backwaters in Kerala you will find the picturesque Vembanad Lake or Vembanad Kayal which is bounded by Alappuzha, Kottayam,Ernakulam districts . There is also the port of Kochi where the lake meets the Arabian Sea.

The towns which are situated along the backwaters are Kollam,Alappuzha and Kottayam and you watch the amazing snake boat race in the month of August and September.

While you go on boat cruises here in the backwaters in Kerala you will cruise through shallow picturesque lakes lined with swaying palm trees . What is more enchanting is sight of the people loading coirs ,cashew on the boat. There are many settlements which are on narrow spurs projecting out towards the lakes when you cross these settlements you can get the feel of the people’s life here.

The Backwaters in Kerala shows its true colors when the snake boat race are hosted during the festival of Onam.
