Devi Garh - Udaipur

Devi Garh is not a hotel, it is a hospitality experience. This all-suite luxury property comprises 39 suites with an amazing attention to design and detail, using local marbles and semi-precious stones. Originally built in 1760 and spread across 7 acres, what makes Devi Garh stand out is the contemporary design showcased within the spectacular heritage building, complemented by personalised services.

The 39 Suites at Devi Garh are divided into 17 Garden, 16 Palace, 5 Aravali and 1 Devi Garh suites. Amenities across all remain more or less the same, it is the distinctive decor that differentiates the suites from one another. The Aravali suites are up in the main palace complex. All the rooms have DVD players and in-house films are on offer.

Palace Suite
The Palace Suites are done all in marble combined with semi precious stones as the theme - such as lapis lazuli, malachite, mother of pearl and jasper. For instance, the suite which has lapis lazuli as its theme, all white and light blue. Everything is made of marble. The beds, sofas, even the dining tables. It is the ultimate in luxury and the last word in quiet elegance. There are urns the colour of lapis lazuli here and the stone itself is kept in a corner. All the palace suites have either balconies or bay windows, which overlook the beautiful lush green fields and the mountains surrounding Devi Garh. Each suite is accessible through traditional aangans (courtyards) transformed with contemporary design. The suites are very roomy and with split-level sleeping area. Amenities include a 29" television, a small, round dining table, safety deposit locker, mini bar, tae/coffee maker, guest service directory, direct dial phone, writing pad, a small torch, incense stick. Every suite has fire escape plan and pots full of water, sprinkled with flower petals. The living rooms has almonds and cashew nuts to munch on, and the marble itself is charming.

Aravali Suites
The Aravali Suites are the most spacious suites at Devi Garh. They offer complete privacy and have a spectacular view of the Aravali hills, which can be enjoyed from balconies or large bay windows. One of the Aravali Suites is a duplex spread over two levels; a loft-like space accommodates the bedroom and bathroom above, while the lower houses the dining and sitting areas.

The design of this particular suite is based on the traditional Indian motif of the lotus. Its likeness is repeated in the paintings in the room, as well as in the floor patterns throughout the suite. It is not surprising then that the suite overlooks the spectacular black marble 'kamal' court, a courtyard that again reflects the image of a lotus in bloom, surrounded by the railing which has lotus patterns.

As you enter the suite you encounter the living area with couches all done in marble. Pillars and arches stand in the middle, beneath which is a small dining table and television. On the left is a sitting room with a window seat, an all glass large window with a stunning view. The washroom is a work of art with a sunk in marble bathtub, two sets of washbasins, two separate shower cubicles and windows with breathtaking views. On the right is the bedroom with an alcove with seating arrangement, overlooking the green hills and with coffee table books.

Garden Suite
The Garden suites overlook the verdant garden, each with its private sit out with stone benches shaded by white canopies. This complex is very peaceful and resounds with the chirping of birds. The suites comprise one room with a double bed, divan, study table, lounge chairs, television. Washrooms are the same as other categories. The old Garden suites have a separate living room too.

Devi Garh Complex
The Devi Garh Suite and the Palace Suite together combine to form the Devi Garh Complex. Both share a common, stunning black marble pool. The two suites are available together or individually. The larger Devi Garh Suite has its own private sun deck and Jacuzzi. The concept behind the design philosophy of the Devi Garh Complex is that of 'Shiv' and 'Shakti' - the respective male and female energies - embodied in Shiva, the Hindu God of destruction in conjunction with Shakti, his consort, who personifies the divine power of femininity. Therefore the motif of Nandi, Shiva's vehicle, is manifested through out the Devi Garh Suite which comprises a seating room with a small dining table and a sofa set, and a separate bedroom which is done in cream and gold and overlooks the black swimming pool.

For the 39 suites, Devi Garh has a 78-cover restaurant. Fine dining is an integral aspect of the experience that Devi Garh is, and the restaurant creates magic. Indian and international cuisine are both mastered by the chefs and the result is all bout the subtlety of flavours, of dishes that are exquisite and light. The restaurant is immaculate white with all-glass large windows with stunning views of the verdant greenery that offsets the white beautifully. Service is polite and courteous without being obtrusive. Food is exceptional.

The bar follows a 'street-chaat' theme, serving platters and barbecued things. It has rough walls, psychedelic couches and cushions (even some four poster beds), and a golden ceiling! The outside seating is lovely, overlooking the pool and the mountains. Beds with bolsters are laid out here, amid candles.

Besides the restaurant, the bar and in-room dining, Devi Garh has numerous special venues for dining, what are called, 'special dining areas'. These range from intimate spaces under the stars with flowers or candles flickering in mirror-inlaid walls, to the gentle sound of flowing water or a view of the mountain peaks lit by the moon. Special, exclusive and unforgettable.

The original Jenana Courtyard is still preserved with a swing that was used by the ladies of the palace as well as a 10th century Jain monument. This area is usually used for wedding ceremonies such as mehendi. Devi Garh also preserves the original prayer room with its rough walls covered with mantras and names of gods. The prayer room is the meditation room now.

The swimming pool is made of granite with white, canopied deck chairs all round it. It is heated in winters.

The Darbar Hall is the original venue where the king used to hold court. Today it is a lounge where the guests can enjoy drinks and snacks. The venue is also used for group events. It's done in yellow and orange with one side with row after row of arches and open balconies with a lovely view. The restaurant terrace also has a brilliant 360 degrees view of the surrounding scenery and is used for parties.

There is a wellness Spa offering therapies and massages by in-house experts, combined with the facilities of a gymnasium, steam, sauna, Jacuzzi, and beauty parlor. Devi Garh's business centre has broadband as well as Wi Fi internet access.

Other facilities offered at Devi Garh include bicycle trips, trekking in the nearby hills, camel safaris, horse riding, kite flying, pool table, croquet, indoor games such as chess, backgammon, checkers and pictionary, a library offering books, CD's and DVD's, airport transfers as well as a shopping arcade.

Located 28 Km northeast of Udaipur, Devi Garh is a convenient and scenic 45 minute drive from the city. The fort, surrounded by lush green fields and mountains on three sides, overlooks the village of Delwara, and is close to the temples of Eklingji and Nagda.
