Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour
India Holiday Travel is your friend on the Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour. Lord Buddha himself had stated in Mahaparinibbana Sutta, which was preached by him in Kushinagar that there will be four places of pilgrimage for the Buddhists after his death. These four places have direct association with important events in the life of Buddha. These were Lumbini, the place of his birth; Bodh Gaya, the place where he attained the enlightenment; Sarnath, the place where he delivered his first sermon and Kushinagar, the place where he achieved Mahaparinirvana.
After the death of the Buddha, the ashes were collected from the funeral pyre of Buddha and divided into eight parts. These parts were distributed among the disciples of Buddha who later erected stupas over these ashes. Stupas are basically earthen mounds erected over some relic or object of great reverence for the Buddhists having direst or indirect association with Buddha or his disciples.
The practice of pilgrimage in Buddhism began with the visit to the four destinations stated by Buddha himself. Gradually the pilgrimage destinations increased with more and more stupas and monasteries being erected. Today, national and international tourists along with the Buddhist pilgrims make it a point to tour these Buddhists pilgrimage destinations. The tour of the Buddhist pilgrimage sites brings peace and composure to one's mind and soul. These places are not important as pilgrimage places but the tour to these places enlighten you their historicity.
